The 19-year-old Brazilian opened the scoring for the away side after just 38 minutes, a lead which they took into half time. Gonzalez then equalised after Insaurralde had been sent off for Independiente, making the scores 1-1. In a tense closing stage which saw the home side also lose Barreto to a sending off, Santos just about held on for the draw.

With the 1-1 result, they progress to the next round of the Copa Sudamericana thanks to a 1-2 aggregate scoreline overall. They will face Libertad in the quarter-finals on August 13.
